Blindsight Alberta Premiere
(USA 2008) 104 min
Grades 9-12 (Mild Language Warning)
Ages 13+

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Himalayas, BLINDSIGHT follows the gripping adventure of six Tibetan teenagers who set out to climb the 23,000-foot Lhakpa Ri on the north side of Mount Everest. The dangerous journey soon becomes a seemingly impossible challenge -- made all the more remarkable by the fact that the teenagers are blind.

Believed by many Tibetans to be possessed by demons, the children are shunned by their parents, scorned by their villages and rejected by society. Rescued by Sabriye Tenberken - a blind educator and adventurer who established the first school for the blind in Lhasa, the students invite the famous blind mountain climber Erik Weihenmayer to visit their school after learning about his conquest of Everest. Erik arrives in Lhasa and inspires Sabriye and her students Kyila, Sonam Bhumtso, Tashi, Gyenshen, Dachung and Tenzin to let him lead them higher than they have ever been before.

The resulting 3-week journey is beyond anything any of them could have predicted.

He loses his father, his brother, his grandparents, his cousin, and his eyesight. Here starts his new life as he adapts to the terrible reality that took away all that is dear to him. Oran inherited the love for the sea from his grandfather, and he dreams of establishing a sailing center in his memory, a center that will allow him to keep developing as a blind mariner. Many difficulties pile up on his way to adulthood, symbolically marked by the celebration of his Bar-Mitzva, but Oran is not a quitter. This is the story of a young teenager whose life was diverted from its course, as he tries to find a way to make his dreams come true and live a normal lie. The movie captures Oran's daily life and illustrates the way he deals with the world that surrounds him, without seeing, and supported by a family torn to shreds, trying to pick up the pieces and move on.
